Lock Categories – Toronto Locks
there are five main lock categories: (1) mechanical key locks, (2) mechanical keyless locks, (3) electronic locks, (4) electro-mechanical locks, and (5) magnetic locks. In this blog post I will focus on the first of these.
Within the category of mechanical, key-operated locks there are four types:
- Pin-tumblers
- Wafer-tumblers
- Disc-tumblers
- Lever-tumblers
Pin
Tumbler locks are traditionally classified as offering either low or high security, and come in either tubular or linear arrangements. (In tubular pin-tumbler locks the pins are arranged in a circle. In linear pin-tumbler locks they are arranged in a straight line.) Low security, linear pin-tumblers use up to six pin pairs: six key (or bottom) pins and six top (or driver) pins. In this type of lock the operating key raises the bottom pins to the shear line, and thus allows the cylinder to rotate and the locking bolt, latch, or cam to be extended or retracted. High security pin-tumbler locks, in addition to using up to seven pin pairs, use an additional locking component which is either a sidebar (e.g. CX-5), an interactive element (e.g. Mul-T-Lock), or a concealed side pin (e.g. Schlage Everest). (For more examples of popular high security locks go to Security Snobs.) Low security, linear pin-tumbler locks are the most widely used lock type in Canada. They are primarily used on residential and commercial doors in rim, mortise, knob, lever, and deadbolt formats.
Wafer
Tumbler locks typically consist of between five and ten spring-loaded wafers that must be either raised or lowered to the top and bottom shear lines before the plug can be rotated to unlock the lock. This type of lock comes in three varieties: single, double, and split. (In actuality there are at least seven different types of wafer-tumbler locks, but for simplicity’s sake we will only look at three here.) In single wafer-tumlber locks each wafer must be lowered to the top shear line before the plug can be rotated to unlock the lock. In double wafer-tumbler locks each wafer must either be raised to the bottom shear-line or lowered to the top shear-line before the plug can be turned. And in split wafer-tumbler locks each half of a wafer pair must be either raised or lower to the same before the plug can be rotated. Single wafer-tumbler locks are commonly found in desk drawers, filling cabinets, and steering wheel clubs. Double and split wafer-tumbler locks on the other hand, are commonly found in automotive ignition, door, and trunk locks.
Disc
Tumbler locks use round slotted detainer discs that interface with a sidebar. These locks are operated using an angle bitted key that aligns the slots (or gates) in each of the eleven or so discs. Once aligned, the sidebar is forced into the slots when the operating key rotates the plug. This allows the bolt, latch, or cam to be extended or retracted. The leading manufacture and inventor of disc-tumbler locks is Abloy. Other manufactures of disc-tumbler locks include: ABUS, Kryptonite, and IFAM. Due to its durability, high level of pick resistance, and bump proof construction, this lock is popular among business owners and government agencies the world over.
Lever
Tumbler locks were at one time the most popular type of lock in the world, but over time they have slowly been replaced in many settings, but not all, by the less expensive and more practical pin-tumbler lock. In this lock each lever, typically between 4 and 7, must be raised to a precise hight (not to high and not too low) to allow the stump on the bolt tail to pass through each lever’s true gate. Once this is done, the key is free to rotate the locks’s curtain to either extend or retract the locking bolt. Though most lever-tumbler locks are operated using single-bitted keys, in high security applications (e.g. safes) double-, triple-, and even quadruple-bitted keys are used. In North America this type of lock is commonly found in antique display cases, safe deposit boxes, and mailboxes. In Europe it is still widely used in mortise locks and padlocks.
Toronto Locks
The key operated, mechanical locks discussed above have a number of important commonalities. They can all be mastered; with the exception of disc-tumblers, the tumblers are under spring tension; they are rekeyable, and therefore can also be keyed alike; with the exception of lever-tumblers, they all make use of a shear-line and, in high security applications, incorporate the use of a sidebar. Finally, these lock types are available in a variety of formats and can be designed and constructed to meet different budget and production demands; which is why they no doubt continue to be widely used the world over.

Toronto Safe Opening
WHY WON’T MY SAFE OPEN?
Depending on the make, model, and type of lock used, there are a number of different reasons for why your safe won’t open. In most cases, but not all, the opening and repairing of your safe will require hiring a certified safe technician or reputable locksmith with safe-work experience. Below I discuss, in no particular order, the ten most common reasons for safe lockouts when the lock being used is a mechanical one, and different opening strategies for each.
1. Combination Change Mishap
Modern dial rings have two index marks. One at the 12-o’clock position called the “opening index” and one at the 11-o’clock position called the “change index”. If the opening index is used for any of the three (or four) numbers during a combination change the new combination will be off by the number span between the index marks, and therefore will not open the safe when dialled in.
2. Loose Dial Ring
When dialling in a combination the opening index is used. If this index mark shifts – by even the smallest amount – from its 12-o’clock position, the combination will not open the safe. If, for instance, the dial ring has shifted to the left by two numbers and the combination is 20-40-60, you will now have to dial in the combination 22-42-62 to open the safe. And if it has been shifted to the right by two numbers, you will have to dial in the combination 18-38-58 to open it.
3. Wheel Slippage
Improper usage of a lock like heavy handed twisting when retracting the lock bolt, severe dial spinning when dialling in a combination, and forcing the lock bolt to extend before the bolt-work is fully thrown, can all lead to wheel slippage. Though less common, wheel slippage can also be caused by frozen flies and by setting the third number in the forbidden zone. Wheel slippage is generally occurs on the wheel closest to the drive cam, and is overcome by adding to the last number in the combination by increments of one and oscillating the dial between the contact points each time this is done.
Call Toronto Safe Opening Today! 1-888-316-8368
4. Bolt End Pressure
Bolt end pressure happens when the carriage is forced against the lock bolt. This is usually caused by either miss-aligned bolt work, an incorrectly installed lock, or a door that has fallen out of alignment.
5. Loose Mounting Bolts
Lock mounting bolts that have not been installed with Loctite loosen overtime and eventually fall into the wheel pack or cause an external relocker to fire. When either the former or latter results in a lockout, usually the only option available to open the safe is to drill it.
6. Stuck Lever
The lever is designed to pivot on a lever screw or post. Overtime, through a lack of proper servicing, this pivot point can become gummed up. When this happens either the nose of the lever does not drop into the gate of the drive cam or takes a very long time to do so. If it does not drop, the safe may need to be drilled. If it takes a long time to drop, the safe can be opened by dialling in the combination, returning the dial to the drop in point, and rapping on the door with a dead blow hammer.
7. Dial End Play
If there is excessive in-out travel of the dial, the drive cam can not transfer motion to the wheel pack and dialling in the combination therefore, will not open the safe. This problem is magnified in floors safes where the drive cam is more easily able to drop away from the tumblers. This problem is overcome by pulling out (or up) on the dial while dialling in the combination; this will bring the drive came back into contact with the wheel pack and the safe should then open.
Call Toronto Safe Opening Now! 1-888-316-8368
8. Internal Relocker Fired
When an internal relocker (or trigger) fires, you can dial in the combination and the lever will drop, but the lock bolt will not retract. During normal operation (depending on the type of lock used) the dial will travel between 10 and 17 numbers from lever drop to bolt retraction. When an internal relocked fires however, the dial will only travel between 1 and 3 numbers from drop in. There are only two causes for an internal relocker firing: (1) a loose lock case, or (2) a melted thermal relock button. When either the former or latter happens, typically the safe must be drilled.
9. Loose Spline Key – Toronto Safe Opening
Loose spline keys are arguably the single most common reason for safe lockouts. The spline key is designed to fit snuggly into the drive cam and spindle; when it does not however, the numbers in a combination are thrown off when dialled in. When dialling left (i.e. counter clockwise) to 50, for example, the drive cam and wheel pack have not caught up and have stopped at 3-5 numbers below 50. When dialling right (i.e clockwise) to 50, on the other hand, the drive cam and wheel pack trail the dial and have stopped at 3-5 numbers above 50. To overcome this problem, you must add to left turns, and subtract from right turns.
10. Broken Drive Pin or Stuck Fly
On occasion drive pins and flies stick or break. When they break wheel counting becomes either limited or impossible, and usually there is little that can be done to avoid drilling the safe. When flies stick however, which is much more common, wheel pick up is felt in a staggered fashion. For tips on how to overcome this problem, please see Sargent and Greenleaf’s Mechanical Safe Lock Guide.
Though most safe lockouts require assembling a number of different, specialized tools, and deciding on an affective, efficient opening procedure, determining the correct reason or reasons for the lockout is more than half the battle. It is my hope that the above will help the reader on his or her way to making this determination.

Toronto Lock Manipulation
When locked out of your bedroom, office, or house you can either force your way back in, and thereby destroy the lock, door, and jamb; or you can call your trusted locksmith and have him manipulate your lock open.
There are at least four such non-destructive opening techniques in use today by locksmiths (and lock picking enthusiasts). They are (1) single pin picking, (2) gun or snap picking, (3) bumping or rapping, and (4) key raking. While it is true that there are other tried-and-true non-destructive opening methods in use today (e.g. impressioning and decoding), they will not be discussed here. Furthermore, this post is limited to the four aforementioned techniques as they pertain to pin-tumbler locks only; that is, to locks that use multiple moveable pins to prevent the rotation of a cylinder, plug, or core.
Call Toronto Lock Manipulation Now! 1-888-316-8368
Single pin picking involves (a) applying torque to the cylinder with a tension wrench, (b) finding the driver or top pin that binds the most, and (c) pushing it up past the shear line with a pick. If the cylinder begins to rotate, the first pin is “set”. This process is repeated for the remaining four pins (or five pins in the case of a six pin lock). Toronto Lock Manipulation use a variety of tension wrenches, the most popular ones in use today are the single finger short angle wrench and the single finger medium angle wrench. When it comes to picks, locksmiths tend to favour the diamond pick, the ball pick, the small and large hook picks, and the short and long rake picks.
The pick or snap gun is a very popular non-destructive entry tool among locksmiths (and law enforcement officers).
This tool comes in both electric and manual forms, with the latter being the more popular among professional locksmiths. To open a lock with a pick gun (a) a tension wrench is inserted into the bottom of the keyway, (b) the pick needle is inserted into the top of the keyway parallel to the bottom pins, (c) the pick is fired while a light amount of shearing force is applied to the cylinder with the tension wrench. When the gun is fired, the kinetic energy of the bottom pins is transferred to the top pins. This causes them to jump above the shear line. If one applies the right amount of torque at this instant, the top pins will be trapped above the shear line, and the plug will rotate.
In physical terms, bumping or rapping a lock essentially does what a pick gun does, though the former tends to be a lot quicker; and for that reason is the author’s preferred method of manipulation. This technique requires (a) inserting the appropriate bump key into the keyway and then pulling it out one pin position, (b) striking the bow of the key with a bump hammer, and (c) applying torque to the key at the moment it bottoms out in the keyway. If done correctly, the driver pins will jump above the shear line and the plug will turn.
Just like when using the pick gun, timing is crucial, so multiple attempts are required before the core will turn. One does not have to use a bump hammer though; people have been known to bump locks with rubber mallets and plastic screwdrivers. The bump hammer however, transfers the energy needed to open the lock more efficiently and does not cause unnecessary damage to the lock or key.
The newest form of lock manipulation in use today is called key raking.
Though popular among locksmiths in the UK, rake keys are not yet widely used by locksmiths. This opening techniques combines elements of traditional lock picking with lock bumping. To open a lock using a rake key one must (a) insert the appropriate key into the keyway and (b) apply a slight amount of turning pressure to it. These two steps are repeated at varying speeds and with varying amounts of torque on both the in and out strokes. Rake keys comes with either three or five peaks, so if one does not open your lock, the other one most likely will.
Before manipulating a lock it is important to check to make sure that all the pins in the lock respond appropriately to a probe, and that the lock is clean and free of debris. If someone has squirted glue into the keyway or a youtuber has broken off a bobby-pin inside it, none of the above covert opening procedures will work and chances are you will have to either drill the lock or bypass it.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SECURITY SAFE
Our business is not just about being great locksmiths, but keeping our customers safe and providing information on how to stay safe. No matter how much insurance you have, no one wants to lose an irreplaceable – at any price – family heirloom, collectible and/or document, either during a burglary or disaster in the home.
Safes give you a secure place to store your valuables while giving you easy access to them at any time.
While everything from a strong box up to a full-sized vault can be called a ‘safe’, for the purposes of this post, we’ll discuss safes that are strong enough to offer fire and burglary protection, but not large enough to be considered a vault, which are generally big enough to walk into. We’re also not including gun and weapons safes because they have their own specifications, including extra locks and pry-proof metal.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a safe for your home or business, here are a few things to consider.
1. WHAT SIZE OF SAFE DO YOU NEED?
The answer may seem obvious. If you’re thinking about a safe, you likely have certain items in mind, so you just need something big enough for those items. But in many cases, home and business owners ‘discover’ that there are far more items they want to protect after they get a safe. The bottom line is to not get one just big enough to store what you think you want to protect; you’ll want to use the safe for other things in the future.
2. WALL SAFE OR FLOOR SAFE?
Despite the movie stereotype of them hidden behind the priceless paining, wall safes can only be made to a certain size, so they are really only good for protecting documents, and they are more complex and costly to install.
3. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO STORE?
Avoid just thinking about protecting your ‘valuables’. Think instead about the belongings you have that you would least like to lose r fall into the wrong hands. Businesses may want to protect and external hard drive. Parents might want to keep prescription drugs in a safe to make sure they are not found and consumed by young children.
4. WHAT TYPE OF PROTECTION DO YOU NEED?
Not every safe is mainly about security against burglary. Safes generally offer one of three different types of security: fire protection, break-in protection, or a combination of both. Consumer Reports says that fire is the most common cause of asset loss, then burglary, then water damage.

Few things are unavoidable for being a great locksmith.
You need to be able to be called upon at any time, as in you need to be available 24/7. You also need to provide mobile locksmith services, as in you need to be able to be on the move constantly.
Mobile locksmiths are some of the most sought out features for locksmith services. Most people only call a locksmith when they need help when they are inconvenienced. If you’re locked out of your car, you don’t want to call a locksmith who says that they will get it in the morning or call a tow truck, you’d just call another locksmith.
How to create a Mobile Locksmith Services
A professional vehicle – Anything less than a service van or truck will look amateurish. If you have a car and work out of your personal car at least, slap a sizable decal on the side of the vehicle. Remember that worried customers are going to be looking for your vehicle for salvation and trade vehicles will be the first things they are looking for, don’t let them down.
The necessary Tools – Mobile locksmith services are a very narrow and niche market.
You don’t need a tremendous amount of tools since they are predominately re-entry services. We recommend carrying a slim jim, set of lockpicks (every size matters), lock gun (if you prefer it), and a wedge or crowbar, it never hurts.
Communication – You need to be able to move quickly and sometimes have an unhindered conversation with a scared customer.
The best way to do this is to invest in hands-free headsets and dashboard mounting for your phone. These directional tools will make arriving at locations easily. If you haven’t already, Google allows you to sync all of your devices so that you can send directions to your phone from your computer. While you’re speaking to the customer, remind them of what to do when they’re locked out of cars.
Toronto Mobile Locksmiths
Toronto Mobile Locksmiths holds us to the highest standards. Toronto Mobile Locksmiths prove 5-star service, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At the top of our websites, we have an orange banner and emergency line. Being a locksmith requires dedication and discipline.
The easiest answer would be to call Toronto Mobile Locksmiths, but we can’t be everywhere at once. When you need the best locksmith services in San Diego, make sure to give us a call or contact us today! We are always pushing quality to its limits, and we want to be the best of the best!

Toronto Commercial Security Hardware
Let’s say you have spent the least amount of money on an “economy brand” hydraulic device called a “door closer” to automatically close the back door of your building. You have had this device installed for efficiency, safety and security.
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS?
As a minimum, you anticipate the door will open and close reliably every time. You expect the door will latch so energy expenses are limited, and not challenged by the failure of the device to work properly. You expect the door to latch to prevent uninvited “guests” from entering or to prevent thievery through an open door (remember sometimes people steal because they can, opportunity is tempting…not because they are a thief!)
What if the door closer fails to operate as advertised and the door fails to latch, how much could you lose? Energy loss is calculable whether air conditioning or heat. Both can be expensive and negatively impact your bottom line. Security will suffer greatly if the door fails to latch properly. Materials loss can cause a lot of pain too for the bottom line; perhaps even cripple your business to bankruptcy!
Call Toronto Commercial Security Hardware Today! 1-888-316-8368
Return on investment? The low-cost solution may save you money on the front-end solution but ultimately cost you thousands in real loss. Once you have identified potential loss, the prudent thing to do is investigate your options and we can help you decide the best form, fit and price for your budget. For the life of most commercial security hardware and key systems the single most expensive component over time is the cost of cut keys. The second most costly purchase is emergency service labor.
Most times when you “change your locks” you do so, on the spur of the moment and at the end of a day, it gets very costly!
You can minimize some of the anticipated cost by using patented key control products or commercial security hardware to prevent unauthorized key duplication. If used in conjunction with key control policies and procedures you can limit risk if you get the key or keys back when an employee leaves. However if you want to maximize security and minimize the budget to do so, interchangeable removable core is the way to go! You can save on costly trip charges and hourly rates of service providers by purchasing patent-protected key control IC Cores. The chief benefit is that you can change cores within seconds which is inherent in the design and immediately secure your facility.
The cost of patented IC Cores and Cut Keys is indeed more than the price for conventional cylinders and standard keys, but the security gained and the savings far outweigh the cost. This is a return on investment you do not want to miss!

Automatic Door Opener & Handicap Entrances:
In order to maintain proper building codes, many sites are required to be handicap accesible.
It can be a daunting process, in terms of research and cost. It can be very difficult to find an automatic door opener that does not cost thousands of dollars. Several of our customers, like churches are finding the need to have at least one automatic opener installed on their building. Many patrons or customers have physical disabilities, that make it extremely difficult for them to gain access to the building. Also, several small business owners are trying to keep up with fire safety codes, that require them to have automatic door openers installed on their facility, especially restaurants. This is not always an easy task and can be a very expensive ordeal, if you don’t know where to look.
Anytime we pass through a mall or a big retail store, we almost always see sets of automatic doors, that open as you approach them.
While these door systems are effective, they can be extremely costly and are usually more than a small business, restaurant or church would need. For example, the doors you walk through at BestBuy, should not be the same type you walk through for 9:00 Mass. They are too elaborate and require a storefront door system, that a church or small business just doesn’t have.
An automatic door opener will replace these elaborate door systems and provide handicap access, only when needed, without having to undergo major construction or costly installations.
Let’s use that church again as an example. On a typical Sunday, a hundred or so people will go through the church doors. Typically, only one or two of those individuals will need to use the handicap button that will activate the automatic door opener. If all 100 of those people were using the button to open the door, it would wear down much quicker and cause strain on the parts, day in and day out. Having a door that is always automatically opened is not only unnecessary but extremely cost prohibitive.
One really good solution is the Ditec Low Profile L.E Swing Operator. This automatic door opener allows barrier-free access, providing customer conveince and meets the requirements of persons will disabilities. It’s the perfect choice for new and existing buildings.
The AutoSwing door operators have been engineered to open doors for people with disabilities and the elderly. The one way clutch allows the door to be opened manually with incredible ease. The AutoSwing incorporates a concealed heavy duty adjustable door stop, therefore eliminating the need for external stops. The AutoSwing is equipped with an adjustable heavy-duty spring. Because of this feature, the AutoSwing can be used to operate larger, heavier doors in windy conditions.
Safe
The AutoSwing door operators are designed with the safety of the user in mind and complies with the latest ANSI standards A156.19 for low energy door operation.
Quiet Operation
The AutoSwing door operators are noise free in both automatic and manual mode for a pleasant, consumer friendly environment.
