Even if you haven’t yet put out all your backyard furniture, unwrapped the BBQ and set up the gas fire pit, think about all the stuff that you keep in your backyard during the summer.
- Now think about how much it would cost to replace all of it should it be stolen. Chances are, you’ll at least get into the thousands of dollars.
- Now think about the security you have to keep all your backyard things safe.
- If you’re like most homeowners, all you’ll have is an easy-to-jump fence.
But backyard belongings are prime targets for thieves because of the lack of security deterrents and how much valuable stuff they can grab. The Edmonton Police even offer online advice specifically about crime-proofing your backyard.

Here are just a few ways for you to deter anyone from entering your yard and, if they do get in, making sure they aren’t able to get away undetected.
1. INSTALL SECURITY LIGHTING
Motion-sensitive security lighting is one of the best ways to deter burglars from entering your yard. Aim lights at entry ways to the backyard and/or directly at the property you most want to protect.
2. ADD VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
Video security systems are a great way to catch a thief in the act. Again, make sure you capture the areas around doors or gates to your yard and where you keep your most desirable property.
But video surveillance does nothing to help you discourage a burglar from entering, unless you make sure they are aware that they’ll be on camera if they enter the yard.
3. LOCK & TIDY
Lock your valuables, like patio furniture and BBQs, to immovable objects, or even each other. Be sure to lock your shed and garage. And keep your yard clear of anything a thief can use to get into your home, like ladders and garden tools, that can be used to reach second floor windows, which are often left open, or to break window glass.
4. BUILD A STRONG, HIGH FENCE
Burglars are deterred by any extra effort they have to make to get into a yard. Climbing a strong fence is not something they want to do and having one in your yard encourages them to move on.
It’s great to be able to enjoy the backyard again. If you make it more secure, you’ll help to make sure that thieves don’t enjoy it too.
